Manuel Lawrence Real (U. S. District Court, Central District of California) rates way up on my list for a Good Judge award of not only good judges but great ones. He was the judge in my cases against the Federal Aviation Administration that I speak about in Chapter five of my book How to Rebel Against the System Before it Overwhelms You (First book on this page). Many attorneys do not like him but that is probably only because they do not like a judge that rules with an iron fist. Believe me when I say I saw him dispense justice too many times to know that is probably the case. But that's what I liked about him. He was fair and did not tolerate anyone being late for court. But, unlike other non-federal cases, all that added up to keeping cases moving along and keeping the calendar clear.

Another Good Judge award goes to Henry W. Shatford (Formerly, Superior Court, Pasadena, CA). A native of New Jersey, Judge Shatford earned his BA at UCLA. He entered law school at the University of Southern California and was admitted to practice in 1947. In 1948, he was appointed to the Pasadena Municipal Court by Governor Edmond G. "Pat" Brown and was elevated in 1966 to the Superior Court. He retired in 1985, but in 1989 a new law was passed providing for the assignment of retired Superior Court Judges to reenter service and since that time he has effectively worked full-time. Judge Shatford served in the Infantry in 1941 in the Air force in 1942-43, was the President of Rotary, the chairman of the Red Cross and the Chamber of Commerce, and has served a number of charitable organizations.

Judge Pro Tem, Alan Freedman, a Santa Monica attorney, deserves my Good Judge award. He was ethical enough to find that PayPal's challenge to venue in my case has no merit and awarded me judgment against them. He did not allow PayPal to pull the wool over his eyes

Commissioner Edward Drayer
Bellflower, CA
Commissioner Drayer took the time and effort required to review all the information presented and reach a just decision. My case was far more complex than the average small claims case and Commissioner Drayer exhibited patience in assuring that both sides were fairly heard.
